First there was nothing. Then came the big bang. Next, we skip forward a bit. It is 1078, and at 2150 hours on day 333, Miss Olivetta Jones gives birth to a 3.18 kilo bundle of joy. It's a boy. From the first moment of his existence, Ziggesmunde's mother decided what his future would be. Like his father, Emilio Ecanza, he would study music and make a name for himself on the stage." Years followed. The typical tale of a young boy, studious and pale, raised by a single mother with a modest income and a love of the arts. The usual problems of the young intellectual, picked on by the local bully, etc. etc. Them came private high school where he did work study and his mother held down two jobs to pay the cost and put food on the table. Then on to a prestigious university with a well regarded music program on a full scholarship. As is frequently the case, our hero (Zig) discovers other things. History, sports, girls, mathematics. He had quite a gift for the last, some moderate success with the girls. He found himself thinking about what he might like to do, rather than what hismother had planned. After four years, he graduated magnum cum laude and was valedictorian. Sadly, his mother passed away two days before he graduated. He didn't find out until he missed her after the ceremony." All of his life Zig had tried to persue his mothers dream. Suddenly, that didn't seem to matter any more. There was nothing tying him to home, and he'd always had a bit of an adventurous streak. Zig joined the scout service a week later and shipped out. He never looked back. The next twenty years were spent in a variety of assignments. Zig really didn't have a plan. He just did whatever needed doing, went where they sent him. He spent time in the field and in the bureaucracy and in spite of his best efforts, he was promoted time and again. He finally rose to the rank of scout leader. When not working, he pursued an interest in off-road racing. The job was becoming all paperwork by now. Zig decided to use his lofty position to wangle a survey mission figuring it would be his last chance in the field. Out on the fringes he encountered a slight difficulty, and had to make a forced landing. He was lucky it was a habitable world. One year, eleven months and twenty three days later, they found his crash site. He'd been living there, alone, for almost two years. Alone except for Mike. And then Larry, but that was later. Spending two years alone, a man gets to thinking. Zig decided when he got back that the last thing he wanted to do was sit in an office and push papers around. He'd joined the scouts for adventure, and that was all past now. He decided it was time to get out. So he took his walking papers, and ended up on Regina. He saw the sites and had a bit of fun. He bought his dream vehicle, got it set up just the way I wanted it and did a bit of racing. But the restlessness was there. Pilot of the merchanter "Eagle's Dare" seem just the right job for someone who wants to move around. Zig is usually found in the company of Mike, his knife, and Larry, a large pet rat. |
