Viv's family are dirt farmers. She did well in school. Her motivation was that it kept out of farm work. She joined the Imperial Navy rather than marry a farmer. Aptitude tests got her into the technical branch. She was a good electronics trouble shooter, which put her where equipment got broken. That is to say combat. She has seen the Elephant and has a good sense of when it's time to hide, shoot, or run.

A major fan of pop music, she followed the music scene. After her last action, she was in a class on communications equipment with another Petty Officer who happened to have a cousin touring with a band touring the sector. He provided the contacts that lined her up with a job that, like the Navy, allowed her to travel from planet to planet, work with top tier electronics & computer systems.
