He is a bit on the small size; Black hair with some gray in it; gray eyes just a little stronger then average, very fast reflexes and great endurance (got to keep up with those 20 year olds!) His face is weather beaten from the large amounts of time he has been outdoors in all types of weather and planetary environments. He has no scars (never wounded.) His appearance is not very remarkable but he makes people feel at ease around him. (Suz I see him as Giles's (from Buffy) plain looking cousin.) In other words he makes you think more of a university professor then a solider.

Col. Bent is from the Planet of Dalhousie (Mole can put that wherever in Imperial Space he wants.) It has two main exports, university education and research done at these universities. Following in the family tradition of military service; James enlisted for a four-year term and had intended to come home after that. His first experience in combat brought home to him that he thrived in the chaos of warfare. When he came home for a recruiting stint, he told his parents that he was going to stay in the Army. They tried very hard to get him to change his mind and end his career in the Army when the term was up. The verbal fights became so intense that Bent would not speak directly or over the phone with his parents but only through e-mail. Time and Bents success in the Army has healed that wound and he and his parents now get along well.

Bent is regarded by his people as a very good officer to serve with because he will pull all the tricks in the book and even write some of his own to get the mission done and everyone out that went in. The one great mystery in Bent's career is why he did not get a posting to a front line unit during the Fifth Frontier War after his graduation from the commando school. The only thing that Bent can think of is that his parents may have influenced one or more of their former students to keep Bent out of that war. (Or it may be someone viewed him as security risk due to his popularity with his people and tactical skill may have decided to keep him away from the front.)

Most people will find Bent fairly easy to get along with and quite pleasant person to be around. He likes to be helpful when and where he can. This masks the ability to commit and order acts of destruction and violence that would leave many people wondering where that nice person went and who this being is in front of them. (Bent and his people, stay within The Imperial Rules of War though.)

During the long periods of time in garrison Bent learned how to play the bass to relive the boredom and tedium of having comparatively little to do. He played at base events and for local charities and celebrations. Those who commented on his playing seemed to think he was very good at it; so after being RIF'ed he has decided to try his hand at being a musician.
